Minority Research Library Residency Program (MRLRP)
The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking a two year Minority Research
Library Resident (MRLR) in its Research and Information Services (RIS)
Department. The University of Iowa Libraries has a strong commitment to
diversity. The purpose of the Minority Research Library Residency Program
is threefold: the program is designed to increase the diversity of the
Libraries' staff; encourage the growth and development of racial and ethnic
minorities; and increase the representation of those groups in academic
research libraries. This program will provide a new professional
experience in a large research library.
The MRLR will serve as a librarian in RIS, a new multi-dimensional
department in the University's Main Library. RIS combines Reference and
Media Services Departments and provides services and user education for
bibliographic and reference resources, print and non-print primary source
collections, electronic text development, computer-assisted methods for
research and teaching, and local and networked access to information. As a
member of RIS, the incumbent will participate in providing reference and
information services, user education, and assistance to faculty in
incorporating information technology into curriculum design. This position
will require some evening and weekend commitment.
Qualifications
Required: A recent graduate degree from an ALA accredited program in
Library and Information Science; general knowledge of electronic
information sources, the Internet, and the World Wide Web; ability to work
in a team environment; excellent written and oral communication skills; and
a demonstrated interest in professional development in the Libraries and
university community.
Preferred: Reference experience in an academic library; teaching experience
at the high school or college level; general understanding of the mission
and functions of a research library and the information needs of academic
users; familiarity with methods and techniques for user education.
The resident will also work with the Director, Human Resources and
Processing Services, to consider opportunities for development related to
the Residency Program. The University of Iowa Libraries does provide
support for professional development activities.
Salary and Appointment: Appointment rank and salary will be based on
relevant experience and educational background and will be made at the
Librarian I level. The salary range for this position is $26,410 -
$38,280. The University offers an attractive package of benefits including

The University of Iowa Libraries: The University of Iowa Libraries consists
of the Main Library (including the Information Arcade) and 11 branch
libraries (Art, Music, Business, and the Sciences), the largest of which is
the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences (including the Information
Commons). With over 4 million volumes, the collections of the University
of Iowa Libraries rank 30 out of 107 in the Association of Research
Libraries. The Libraries presently uses the ExLibris Aleph 500 system as
our online system (InfoHawk). The University is a member of the Online
Computer Library Center (OCLC), and the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation (CIC). The Libraries provides a program of support for
professional development activities and its staff members are actively
engaged in national cooperative efforts.
Environment: The University and Iowa City: A major research and teaching
institution, the University of Iowa offers recognized programs in a wide
variety of areas. The University consists of a faculty of some 1,700
serving over 28,000 students, over 9,000 of whom are registered in graduate
and professional degree programs. The University of Iowa employs over
15,000 permanent full-time and part-time staff. Iowa City is a community
with excellent educational, recreational, and cultural advantages, and is
readily accessible via interstate highways and a major airport only 30
minutes away.
