MONOGRAPHIC CATALOGING LIBRARIAN
CENTRAL PROCESSING SERVICES

Position Description: The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking a
creative and energetic person to provide leadership for copy cataloging
activities, to participate in the formulation of cataloging policies and
procedures, and to catalog general monographic materials in all
formats.  Upon successful completion of an initial training period, the
incumbent will assume supervisory responsibility for copy cataloging
activities, which will include providing leadership for the formulation of
copy cataloging policies and procedures, supervision and evaluation of the
work of library assistant catalogers and participation in their
training.  The incumbent will also perform original cataloging of general
monographic materials in all formats using InfoHawk; the Libraries'
implementation of the Aleph integrated library system from ExLibris.

In addition to this, the incumbent will be expected to contribute to the
overall governance of Central Processing Services through participation in
the CPS supervisors group, which helps advise the Coordinator of Central
Processing Services in the development of departmental policies and
guidelines.  The incumbent will also represent Central Processing Services
on Libraries' committees and may also participate on University committees.

Qualifications:
Required:  ALA-accredited Master's degree in library and information
science.  Knowledge of AACR2r, LC Rule Interpretations, LC subject headings
and classification, and USMARC formats.  Ability to learn and effectively
use networked electronic workstations, local online cataloging resources,
and cataloging resources available via the Internet.  Ability to work both
independently and as a team member on a variety of issues in a dynamic
environment.  Effective oral and written communication skills, as well as
excellent listening/participatory skills.  Strong organizational and
problem solving skills. Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and set
reasonable goals and time frames for work to be accomplished.  Ability to
undertake concurrent multiple tasks and work effectively in a production
oriented environment.  Active participation in the library profession with
a commitment to continued personal and professional development.  Broad
understanding of the functions and mission of a research library and of
current developments in the field.

Preferred: Minimum one year academic or research library experience in
cataloging monographs including electronic media.  Supervisory/management
experience.  Minimum one-year recent experience using an online integrated
library system and using OCLC and/or RLIN.  Coursework, practical training
or bibliographic knowledge of one or more foreign languages, preferably
eastern or western European.

Salary and Appointment: Rank and salary will be determined based on
relevant experience and educational background, will be competitive with
eer institutions, and will be made at the Librarian I or II level.  Salary
range $31,500 - $49,775.  The University of Iowa offers an attractive

The University of Iowa Libraries: The University of Iowa (UI) library
system consists of the Main Library (including the Information Arcade) and
11 branch libraries (Art, Music, Business, and the Sciences), the largest
of which is Hardin Library for the Health Sciences which includes the
Information Commons, an electronic classroom facility.  With over 3 million
volumes, the collections of the UI Libraries rank 30 out of 107 in the
Association of Research Libraries.  The Libraries presently uses the
ExLibris Aleph 500 system as our online system (InfoHawk).  The Libraries
has been active in the development of services related to the digital
technologies with the creation of such units as the Information Arcade and
Information Commons.  The University Libraries is an active member of the
Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation (CIC), College and Research Libraries (CRL), American Research
Libraries (ARL), and the ARL SPARC Project.  The Libraries provides a
program of support for professional development activities and its staff
members are actively engaged in national cooperative efforts.

Environment - The University and Iowa City: A major research and teaching
institution, the University of Iowa offers recognized programs in a wide
variety of areas.  The University consists of a faculty of some 1,700
serving 28,000 students, over 9,000 of whom are registered in graduate and
professional degree programs.  Special strengths include the writing
workshops and strong programs in English, history, American studies and
women's studies, which recently instituted a Ph.D. program.  The University
of Iowa employs over 15,000 permanent full-time and part-time staff.  Iowa
City is a community with excellent educational, recreational, and cultural
advantages and is readily accessible via interstate highways and a major
airport only 30 minutes away.  The Iowa City area supports a very active
book arts community.
