Minutes of the August 28, 2001 meeting

The meeting was held in the student lounge of the School of Library and 
Information Science (SLIS), 3rd floor Main Library.
Welcome to the start of the Fall Session for the 2001-02 academic year!
Ethel Bloesch began the session by introducing the opportunities for 
scholarships that are available to SLIS students. Some have a short 
deadline. (See lounge bulletin board for blue information sheet). Also, 
Iowa Library Association (ILA) sessions will be posted on the 
slis.listserve for the upcoming October 10-12th meeting in Davenport. 
Ethel announced that there will be opportunities for students to 
participate in the American Library Association (ALA) Accreditation 
process for the SLIS program at the U of Iowa this year. A survey, 
primarily directed to continuing students, will be mailed to our homes. 
This information will be used to compile the self-study report due in 
November. Then, on March 26 & 27, students will have the opportunity to 
meet the Accreditation team during their tour of the facility.[Note: Our 
SLIS program was founded in 1967 and has been continuously accredited 
since 1971.] Mentor program information is available ---ask in the SLIS 
office if interested.
The new SLIS tech lab manager is Jan Waterhouse. Her e-mail for requests

Be sure to pick up a gold SLIS information sheet in front of the office 
door. See the SLIS lounge bulletin board for information regarding a 
Dance Marathon in the Spring, and future Colloquium Speaker information.
Kristine Male, Social Director, is interested in getting us together for 
lunch at the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) River Room, and for dinner at the 
Mill Restaurant, as well as a Fall picnic at a shelter in City Park. 
Please e-mail her with your suggestions for dates and times.remember, 
the squeaky wheel gets the oil... Halloween Party anyone??? (Contact her

Brett Elder, Kitchen Manager, reminds us to sign up to help keep our 
kitchen clean. See list on refrigerator for dates available. Pop cans 
are recycled in the designated container/can in the kitchen and the 
money goes into the LISSO treasury.
Future LISSO meetings to be announced via slis.listserve, so, be sure to 
sign up. .and help spread the word to all  the new students.  We will 
try to meet monthly.
Note: 2-3 Graduate Student Government Representatives are needed for one 
Tues. evening meeting/month. (More details are coming).
