  1. Characterize the distinction between what can be expressed in an encoding scheme (semantics) and how it is expressed (syntax).

  2. Explain why a thesaurus does not typically serve well as a subject header hierarchy.

  3. Explain the notion of an access point and its role in patron information seeking.

  4. We have frequently used spatial metaphors (e.g., the notion of an information space) during the semester.  Propose two reasons why this type of metaphor appears to have such utility.
