Initial Second Life Readings Deemed a Success

Even as SLIS prepares for another live reading in the virtual world of Second Life, the first event in conjunction with the International Writing Program is getting some press.

The grant funded project pairs SLIS students with writers. The students control avatars (or virtual characters) made for the writers during readings on a special “island”.
SLIS student Angela Murillo is working on this as part of her digital librarian fellowship. She says the readings are going well so far.

SLIS students are helping with IWP readings in Second Life.
The University of Iowa News Services published a recent article about the first reading.
A second reading is being held on Oct. 30 at 2 p.m. You can get to the island amphitheater by clicking this link: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Engle%20Island/155/112/29.
If you don’t have an avatar in Second Life, you can listen to audio streaming here: rtsp://quicktime.uiowa.edu/mystream.sdp or by pasting that url into Quick Time.
In the future, the island may be used for one act plays in addition to IWP readings.
If you would like to get involved, contact Angela Murillo at her uiowa email, or friend her avatar, “Angelita Eiren”.
Second Life will be installed in most computers the Computer Classroom and the Colab.
