I am a full-time graduate student in the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science. As part of the Program for University Librarians in the Sciences(PULS), I have a half-time assistantship at the Iowa State University Parks Library. PULS is funded by a grant through the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Designed to recruit and train future academic librarians through a combination of coursework and hands-on experience, PULS has been a valuable experience for me. Through this unique opportunity, I have actively participated in a variety of aspects of academic librarianship, including:

• teaching 2 sections of a required undergraduate library instruction course
• creating a pathfinder for a marine biology class
• converting out-of-date serials records to OCLC using MARC format
• locating electronic equivalents for reference materials to add to the library catalog
• teaching a visiting high school class how to use library resources
• creating a shelflist of Library of Congress Classification schedules and assisting in deselection process
• working at a large research university library's reference desk
