TOPICS FOR THE DISCUSSION PAPER
Foundations of Library and Information Science
Summer 2001

Topics should be of current concern within the area of library and information science;
students have a wide choice, e.g.:

Relationship between the development of society, means of communication and library and information science.

Information Science and its emergence as a discipline

Impact of Internet on libraries

Retrieving information from Internet or from other large scale information systems

The concept of service in libraries and information centers

Intellectual freedom and libraries / motives for censorship / reacting to attempts to censor libraries / filtering of Internet access

Classification in libraries / catalogs and MARC / webcats

Major institutions: LC, OCLC, ALA etc.

Current issues in specific types of library: public, academic, school, corporate etc.; library consortia

Current issues relating to specific services or activities within libraries: acquisitions, technical services, reference, circulation etc.

Services for the poor, disadvantaged, immigrants, rural areas; community information systems

Automation / audiovisual media and libraries

Copyright / fair use / digital reserves

Digital libraries / e- journals / e-books / online reference services

Etc. etc.

Good papers should:
Deal with a topic of current concern
Exame issues from both sides
Present good examples to illustrate problems
Offer clear, practical solutions
Cite recent publications of relevance
Use a balanced mixture of print and Internet sources

Avoid repeating approaches or ideas already presented in the Internet or Database exercises
