1979-80: Research into the automation of libraries and bibliographic information systems in Brazil, for Ph.D. thesis; interviews with 55 persons in six cities, plus additional data collection via mail.
1984-5: Coordinator of research project to define the information needs of industries in Joao Pessoa, Brazil, with Federal government financial support. Interviews with the managers of 70 companies; data analysed by SPSS.
1986-87: Coordinator of research project on the book in Pernambuco State: evaluation, bibliographic control and future perspectives. Exhaustive survey of books published in a major Brazilian state in 1980-4; data registered in Pro-Cite data base, using specially modified format; team of ten students and four professors; personal bursary and two research scholarships from the Federal government.
1986-7: Coordinator of research project on the current state of automation of libraries in Brazil; evaluation, survey and creation of data base of relevant institutions. Data on 42 relevant institutions registered in Pro-Cite data base, using specially modified format.

1993-96: Coordinator of research project on the development, testing and evaluation of software for the automation of small and medium sized Brazilian libraries; development of the AUMIP circulation system, which ran inside a Micro-Isis application; personal research scholarship from the Federal Government; development of the CIRSI circulation system, an independent system using compact Micro-Isis software.
1993-1994: Supervisor of research project of students of the Library Science Department of the Federal University of Pernambuco on the impact of automation on the staff of the integrated library system of the Federal University of Pernambuco. Two Federal government research scholarships.

Indexing serials published in the university, adding data to the general catalog of the university library; evaluating articles published in these serials as a channel for transmission of relevant information. DATA BASES SET UP BY CAVAN MICHAEL MCCARTHY
O Livro em Pernambuco: data base of books published in the state of Pernambuco in the five year period, 1980-1984; 1,300 records, Pro-Cite software, customized format, includes full bibliographic information in a presentation close to AACR, indexing terms, number of copies published, relationship between the author and the state of publication etc. Data collection involved sending a team of researchers to all institutions which might possibly have published books; all items issued in the five year period were recorded. This is probably the most detailed survey of regional publishing ever undertaken in a Latin American context.
40 anos da Editora Universitaria da UFPE: data base of books published by the University Press of the Federal University of Pernambuco, 1956 - 1996; 1,163 records, Micro-Isis software; full bibliographic information, indexing terms, number of copies published, relationship between the author and the university etc. Micro-Isis is a sophisiticated bibliographic data base developed by Unesco which is in wide use in Latin America and in other developing countries. It runs on a variety of computers, from mainframes to PCs, and offers powerful indexing and formatting modules. As the United States are not currently a member of Unesco the software is little known there. The Micro-Isis print-out format used in this project is especially complex and emulates all features of a full AACR bibliographic description.
Automacao de Bibliotecas no Brasil: data base used to record and analyse automated Brazilian library systems; each record registered automation of a specific library and fields were set aside for each activity which could be automated (acquisition, cataloging, circulation etc.); within each field the method used to automate that activity was recorded, together with the number of transactions, books processed, circulated etc. Substantially modified Pro-Cite software recording data on a total of 86 institutions. The software was then used to analyse the results semi-automatically; this is an unusual example of a largely textual data base which has been designed in such a way as to facilitate systematic analysis of data.
Periodicos da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco: data base of articles in periodicals published by the Federal University of Pernambuco. Data incorporated into the automated catalog of the university library, which uses a slightly simplified MARC format (uses all MARC fields, but does not use subfield delimiters, permitting processing by IBM Stairs). Most university departments publish at least one periodical, even if irregularly; several hundred articles in the periodicals published by the Federal University of Pernambuco are being indexed by a team of students and the data input to the general university catalog, where it can be retrieved simultaneously with data on book holdings. University periodicals include much significant material of local relevance, but are rarely indexed and projects of this nature are rare.
Indice dos artigos de periodicos relevantes aos estudantes de graduacao, Universidade Catolica de Pernambuco: index of periodical articles relevant to students; Catholic University of Pernambuco. System set up on mainframe computer in the early 1980s; indexes periodical articles and produces print-out which emulates a card file; i.e. indexing terms in alphabetical order, under each term a list of relevant periodical articles. All periodicals are available in the library of the University; an early automated system, but effective in offering information urgently required but rarely available in Brazilian university libraries.
Base de Dados Demonstrativa em dBASE, utilizando literatura de cordel: demonstration data base in dBASE, specially designed for teaching purposes. Includes examples of all dBASE fields and offers different output formats for AACR (catalog card) presentation, ABNT (Brazilian bibliographic citation rules) presentation and organization by columns. Literatura de cordel: Brazilian popular poetry pamphlets (chapbooks); these are very suitable as material for a student-orientated activity, not only because they are an essential part of the culture of North East Brazil, but also because they are relatively easy to enter into a data base.
Base de Dados Demonstrativa em Micro-Isis, utilizando literatura de cordel: objectives are similar to those of the dBASE system cited above, but implementation is substantially different. Notable features include an unusual output format in which the data appears in four different presentations: AACR (catalog card) format; ABNT (Brazilian bibliographic citation rules) format; columnar format; mirror format (data exactly as keyboarded into the data base, including subfield delimiters). This permits students to see immediately not only the power of the formatting language, but also the effect of different keyboard errors on output.

New Brazilian Publications: data base of current Brazilian books developed for a book seller specializing in exporting Brazilian publications to North American and British universities; Pro-Cite software, customized format, full bibliographic information in a presentation close to AACR, shipment and holdings information, order information, production of selection lists for libraries, order lists for book suppliers, invoice information and compact lists for book searchers’ field trips; controls shipments for both blanket (standing) orders and computerized orders.
