This course is designed to present an overview of concepts, components, and current developments in reference and information services provided in various types of libraries. The major topics of study include: 1) concepts, models, and practice of reference and information services; 2) reference sources in various fields and formats; and 3) information technology and its impact on providing reference and information services.

• To understand and apply concepts and techniques that support reference and information services
• To identify and use efficiently reference sources in various formats, knowing their characteristics and functions
• To describe and apply criteria for evaluating reference sources
• To examine information technology and current models for using technology in delivering services

Read assigned readings in advance of class.

Attend class and participate in class discussions and activities.

Complete assignments and submit on the due dates.

Other readings may be assigned in class.

Students will need to have access to the following forms of technology:

• print and electronic reference resources
• reviewing/selection tools
• professional library literature

All assignments must be completed; points will be deducted for unexcused late assignments.
