ejournals

To complete before class

Choose an electronic journal from the UI Libraries collection, using this complete list of such journals. Note: The actual list of individual journals begins after the blue box labeled Power Reference, starting with the journal title Abdominal Imaging. To avoid having more than one student choose the same journal, please don't select one from this first page. Instead, peruse the list by clicking the Next 100 Matches button at the bottom of the page, or by performing a search for a journal of interest to you, also at the bottom of the page.

Access to most journals from off campus is possible by the entry of your university ID number--an example of a proxy server at work.

Having selected a journal, simply browse it. Which data formats does it use (HTML, PDF, others)? Does it make use of dated issues? Can you tell if there's a corresponding print version of your chosen journal? How far back in time do its issues go in electronic format? Are there any features that surprised you, or were any features missing that you expected to see?

Come to class prepared to display and breifly explain your journal to us in two minutes or so.

Read these two relatively brief articles from Wired, and come prepared to discuss.

The Science of E-Publishing, Kendra Mayfield, Wired, 2000.10.19.

Publish, Perish, or Pay Up?, Kendra Mayfield, Wired, 2001.03.15.
